P.G. Wodehouse- The Unknown Years by Baroness Reinhild von Bodenhausen. A Stamford Lake publication.
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, famed British humourist and creator of Jeeves and the Blandings Castle novels enjoyed enormous popular success during a literary career that spanned more than 70 years.
Despite the political and social upheavals that occurred during his life, much of which was spent in France and the United States, Wodehouse's main canvas remained that of pre-war English upper class society reflecting his birth, education and lifestyle.
Living in France, Wodehouse and his wife Ethel were overtaken by advancing Nazi troops and imprisoned.
Upon release he was held in Germany where he was looked after by an aristocratic German mother and daughter in the country estate and castle of Degernerhausen. During this time, he was tricked into making pro-Nazi broadcasts and though essentially a personal account of his captivity and humourous in nature, these outraged the British public so much so that Wodehouse's loyalty to the Crown was questioned in Parliament.
Wodehouse, the Unknown Years is written by Baroness Reinheld von Bidenhausen who together with her mother looked after the Wodehouses from 1941-1942. For the first time, Wodehouse fans can take a journey back in time and see the author through the eyes of someone who knew him during a time of much tribulation in his life.
A definitive collector's item for the Wodehouse fan, the book to be launched on April 8 and will be available at all leading bookshops in Colombo. |
