‘Kuveni’ is back

Veteran playwright Henry Jayasena’s award winning play “Kuveni” directed in 1960s will go on board again with a novel cast and a crew in Colombo.

Directed by Samudra Jeewani Karunananda, a master of Theatre Arts, the play will be staged at 6.45 pm on May 6 at Elphinstone Theatre, Colombo.

A talented cast includes, Nimal Jayasinghe, Prasannajith Abeysuriya, Dulanjali Sankalya, Rajitha Hewathanthirige, Warnatunga Senanayake, Visaka Jayasweera, Thilina Prabath Adikaram, Dilini Radhika, Rasika Pushpasiri, Nishantha Karunasena, Gayantha Sanjeewa, Suneth Shanthapriya, Niluka Rajamanthri, Nilakshi Dharani Ekanayake, Nivoni Dayangi, Kumari Dahanayake and students of the University of Aesthetic studies.

Kuveni has been hailed by critics as well as theatre-goers as a milestone production which brought a new stylistic trend in the Sri Lankan theatre. Kuveni won almost all the awards in the stylized section of the National Drama Festival in 1963. Late actress Manel Jayasena who marked her first public appearance as an actress as well as singer in ‘Kuveni’ won the best actress award for her excellent performance at the State Drama Festival in 1963.

In the new production Taksila Himashi and Padma Maduranga Weerasinghe are in-charge of the stage management and costumes are designed by Prasannajith Abesuriya.

Music based on the award winning original music director H. H. Bandra is handled by Gayanath Nakala Dahanayake while make-up is by Chaminda Lakmal and the lighting by Janakaraliya Lighting Technician. The New production is a joint effort by the University of Aesthetic Studies and Nirmala Prakashana. The play is organized by Jude Srimal.
