Celebrating the 10th anniversary of this festival which runs from April 30 to May 8, the organizing committee of the festival has decided to make a special focus on Sri Lankan Cinema. A noteworthy feature of the selection is that Festival committee has selected five films directed by Dharmasena Pathiraja, who has made a valuable contribution to the emerging new Sri Lankan cinema.
Sri Lankan films screened are ‘Aahas Gawwa’, ‘Bambaru Evith’, ‘Ponmani’, ‘Para Dige’ and ‘Mathuyam Davasa’ directed by Dharmasena Pathiraja, ‘Anantha Rathriya’ and ‘Ira Medhiyama’ directed by Prasanna Vithanage, ‘Me Mage Sandai’, ‘Thani Thatuven Piyabanna’ directed by Asoka Handagama, ‘Mage Vam Atha’ directed by Linton Semage and ‘Sulaga Enu Pinisa’ directed by Vimukthi Jayasundara.
Dharmasena Pathiraja, Prasanna Vithanage, Asoka Hadagama, Vimukthi Jayasundara along with the Sri Lankan Coordinator Ashely Ratnavibhushana President, Asian Film Centre and Secretary of NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) are scheduled to participate at this event representing Sri Lanka.
This is the fifth occasion where the Sri Lankan cinema gets a special focus at an International Film Festival. Sri Lankan cinema had a special focus at the Focus on Asia: Fukuoka International Film Festival held in 1994 and 2002 and films of Lester James Peries and Sumithra Peries were featured at the 1995 Hong Kong International Film Festival. Five films of Dharmasena Pathiraja were screened at the 2003 Singapore International Film Festival.
Asian Film Centre coordinated Sri Lankan films at all these international film festivals.
