Five drown in Vesak tragedy

Five persons, including two teenagers and a 12-year-old, who had gone Vesak-sightseeing yesterday drowned in a lake in Kochchikade. The tragedy occurred in the Halpevila (lake), close to the Ma Oya, police said.

The five persons were seen playing with a ball in the water. According to eyewitnesses, one or more members of the group had got into difficulty after going into deeper waters, and the others had tried to help them.

The victims included a father and his two sons from Piliyandala, and a father and daughter from Katana.
The victims were identified as Nandakumara Hewagamage (47) and sons Malith Mathuka (19), an Advanced Level student at Mahanama College, Colombo, and Madheera Gihan (15). The other two were Wijdendra Waduge Dilan Rohitha (38) and daughter Diliki Madara (12).
