Advertising agency JWT, which came in third at The Chillies 2009, said it does not object to the current metal tally which was introduced at this year’s awards show.
Responding to The Sunday Times FT report last week headlined ‘Chillies post-awards heats up’ JWT said it entered this year’s awards well aware of the new point system and fully respects the results of Chillies 2009. JWT CEO Thayalan Bartlett said his comments at the post awards press conference on the tally system was a response to a question from a journalist who asked the President of the 4A’s about the controversy surrounding the new point system which was raised by another agency.
Mr. Bartlett said the President of the 4A’s responded saying the new point system received the unanimous approval of both associations and the heads of agencies and therefore there should be no confusion about its acceptance and implementation. “At this point I had to clarify our position on the matter by saying I reject that both associations had the consent of JWT as I had opposed the point system months before its implementation. As a member of the Blue Print committee I had clearly stated my position on this matter and I had emails to prove it. JWT officially lodged its protest as it saw flaws in the system at the collective agency heads meeting to introduce the new point system.”
Following this question, Mr. Bartlett said another reporter asked him if JWT's metal tally this year was based on the old point system, would it have been nominated Agency Of The Year? “I responded saying yes and we would have achieved it with an impressive margin.”
In the statement, Mr. Bartlett added that Chillies 2009 has been fulfilled as per the blue print of 2009 and JWT has no issue with it for this year. “The winning agency Leo Burnett rightfully takes agency of the year based on this new point system and we do not like to take anything away from their moment of glory.”
