The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday annulled an earlier SC court order to suspend hearings in an investigation of alleged intimidation of witnesses by six Negombo-based police officers who are facing charges of alleged bribery in a case filed in the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
The earlier Supreme Court order, issued by former Chief Justice Sarath Nanda Silva, was overruled by a bench comprising Chief Justice Asoka de Silva and judges K. Sripavan and Chandra Ekanayaka.
The case was filed by the Bribery Commission.
The six police officers, including Negombo OIC Somasiri Liyanage, had petitioned the Supreme Court to suspend hearings into the alleged intimidation of court witnesses.
The Bribery Commission told court on Friday that the SC ruling had discouraged the witnesses from giving evidence.
