The Central Provincial Council has withdrawn a resolution that President Mahinda Rajapaksa should remain in office without facing elections, after objections raised by its opposition leader S.B. Dissanayake that the resolution contravened Standing Orders.
Mr. Dissanayake said that according to Provincial Council Standing Orders, the council could not discuss the conduct of a Member of Parliament, the Governor or the President and therefore the resolution was illegal.
He said if such a resolution was moved, the opposition would also have the right to criticise the President on allegation against him as well and it would have to be officially recorded.
The comments made by Mr. Dissanayake have been expunged from the PC record books.
For the past weeks, Provincial Council minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon has been spearheading a campaign for the President to remain in office without facing a fresh election.
But the President himself declared in an interview recently that he would seek a mandate from the people early next year. |
