They came in large numbers, over 1,750, to get themselves checked, having been out of the healthcare services for more than two decades as they had been living in areas affected by terrorism.
They were screened and medications dispensed where necessary to bring down blood sugar levels and hypertension at this medical camp in Polonnaruwa organized by the National Stroke Association of Sri Lanka (NSASL) and attended by 15 top doctors including Consultant Rheumatologist Dr Lalith Wijayaratne and Consultant Neurologists Dr. Padma Gunaratne, Dr. Udaya Ranawaka, Dr. M.T.M. Riffsy and Dr. Harsha Gunasekara.

The camp was held at Asela Maha Vidyalaya , Welikanda on July 5. It was a very rewarding experience and one of the best clinics that he had conducted in his medical career, said NSASL President Dr. Wijayaratne.
There is a severe shortage of medical services and medicines in these areas and the NSASL was able to distribute medicines worth over Rs. 600,000 at this clinic.
The medical camp was carried out under the sponsorship of the Hatton National Bank- Polonnaruwa branch jointly with the bank's Divisaviya project. Through the goodwill of several pharmaceutical companies, the organisers were able to take a large quantity of medicines and drugs which were distributed after being prescribed by the doctors.
More than 400 spectacles were also given to needy villagers after their sight was checked by Novartis Ophthalmic. |
