Election fever grips Jaffna

By N. Parameswaran

With the date for elections to the Jaffna Municipal Council drawing near, political parties contesting the poll are campaigning briskly. Those contesting under the UPFA ticket have had several ministers visiting the area and campaigning on their behalf.

The IDP issue has become a central theme in many of the campaigns. One SLFP candidate has even handed out forms to relatives of IDPs claiming, he would help expedite their release from camps if the forms were filled and returned to him.

The EPDP organised a mass rally of three-wheelers, motorbikes, vans and open trucks with advertisements participating within the MC area. Supporters of the EPDP chanted slogans calling on people to vote for the “betel leaf” --the symbol of the ruling party-- traditional drummers and band music played in the background.

There are numerous posters on display with ruling party dominating the poster war. Minister Douglas Devanada's face is a familiar sight now. The TULF too displayed posters with Chelvanayakam’s and Anandasangaree's faces adorning them.

TNA MP's are campaigning on political issues such as the 13th Amendment.
