By Shammarah Ismath (11 years), Minaret High School. Kid Reporter K-03

The 'Big Wild Read' is a competition held at British Council for the Young Learners Centre members focusing on the environment and animal conservation. It began on March 1, 2008.

The participants should read six books within six weeks. One book should be read within one week's time. In order to join this competition, one should have a Young Learners membership card and should between 8 – 15 years old.

There would be a special set of books available to the participants of the 'Big Wild Read'. Only the child registered for the 'Big Wild Read' will be allowed to choose the books, read, write a review and collect the prize.

Each participant will receive gifts for finishing each book. The gifts are bookmarks, stickers, fridge magnets and pens. For the sixth and final book the participant will receive a medal and a
certificate.

This competition motivates young readers, encouraging reading habits which will last a lifetime. It boosts their self confidence, they feel rewarded for their reading and are given a self-welcoming environment that supports their development as readers.

I have completed all six books. They are 'Jake Cake', 'Bloomin' , 'Rainforests', 'Sophie and Akimbo' and the 'Crocodile Man'. All the books I read were interesting, adventurous and exciting. I'm sure that everyone of us gained maximum benefit from this competition.

All the participants of the 'Big Wild Read' are grateful to the British Council for organising this competition.
