Koluu’s gourmet fare of food and humour

By Megara Tegal

Under a white canopy on a sunny Thursday morning, gourmet chef Koluu conducted a cookery demonstration for some scrumptious dishes. The event was organised by Keells Super at their recently opened outlet in Union Place.

In no time he had whipped up five dishes, adding a generous dollop of humour at the outdoor event.
The menu for the day included the Greek dish Moussaka, his very own Vietnamese inspired Griddled Mango Chicken, Thai Beef Curry, Pasta with Tomato and Vodka Sauce, and Raw Spinach Salad with Blue Cheese Dressing.

Coaxing some of the ladies in the audience to help him prepare the dishes, together they made the preparation of these exotic foods seem effortless. While Koluu mixed ingredients and sprinkled in spices, he revealed a few of his secret cooking tips while sharing some anecdotes with the guests. He also shared healthy cooking tips but liberally added butter, cheese and cream to some of his dishes albeit with a guilty grin of a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Speaking about the food he prepared, Koluu stuck to the original recipe for Moussaka but added “We all have our unique way of cooking. After all no curry made by two different people will taste the same”. The Griddled Mango Chicken is an original recipe that was inspired by a visit to Vietnam. Describing the difference between local and Vietnamese dishes he said “they use a few ingredients so their food has a subtle taste while here in Sri Lanka we use a lot of spices”.

The al fresco event was a hit among the invitees who took down notes of all that the celebrity chef had to share.
