Call for auditions for a play celebrating British Council's 60th year in Sri Lanka

UK director and theatre teacher William Scott Richards will be in Sri Lanka from September 24 to November 5 2009. He will be leading a team of people to create a theatre piece to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the British Council in Sri Lanka. The production will be constructed from British theatre texts, adapted (and translated, where appropriate), woven together to take the audience on a journey of "challenge, change and the peace-maker".

Actors, directors and those interested in other roles in production are invited to meet and audition for the project. These auditions or meetings will take place in the last week of September, and the work to start immediately thereafter. If you wish to be considered for a performing role please prepare an audition piece, of any kind, no longer than three minutes in English, Sinhala or Tamil. If you want to attend the workshops and have an interest in directing or assisting in some other element of the production please bring along a short, written statement about yourself to the auditions.

We are seeking people for a variety of roles the project will require, for some people, a large time commitment. Be prepared. (See tentative schedule in article) We want to involve both experienced and not so experienced people and also would encourage participation from those who have experience of working in Sinhala and Tamil language theatre. However, English is desired as a working language. Musical skills are also sought. Teachers and directors might also be interested in applying to take part.
The production will be born out of workshops on approaches to acting and devising. The workshops and rehearsals will be in central Colombo and will be highly practical and full attendance will be required in the early weeks. Expect to be very busy for five weeks!

William Scott Richards has worked for the British Council in Sri Lanka over twelve years ago and again two years ago when he created a mixed language version of Romeo and Juliet and Far Away at the Punchi Theatre. For ten years he taught at RADA in London, directs for the BBC and has directed and taught across the world including the West End in London, RSC, New York, Argentina….
