Miracles do not happen only in books, they happen in real life as well.
The relative David of Asian rugby namely Sri Lanka cut a slice of history for itself in Hong Kong yesterday. A bunch of 15 young boys defeated giants South Korea by 31 points (four goals and one penalty) to 3 (one penalty) in their Junior Rugby Asiad Third Place Playoff Match.
With 17 minutes gone the score read 10 points to 3 in favour of the Koreans. Sri Lanka had been put on the back foot from the get go with South Korea running in two unconverted tries. Sri Lanka had answered with only a penalty by Kingswoodian scrum half Roshan Weeraratne.
But the young Lankan Lions refused to lie down like lambs as they touched twice courtesy of Royalist Nikira Senanayake and Dharmarajah’s centre Dharshana Ettipola. Weeraratne made no mistake with the conversions to give Sri Lanka a 17 to 10 lead at lemons.
Another converted try by Ettipola, who had an outstanding tournament, and a touch down from Prince of Wales flanker D. Honanthara ensured that the Lankans ran out winners despite intense pressure and a late try by the Koreans. - HJ |
