The American College of Higher education, Dehiwela, scored a resounding victory over Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT) in their annual encounter played at the Havelocks grounds at Pedris Park.
The final score of 17 to 5 in favour of the American College, gives no indication of the intensity at which the game was played. Both teams played to their utmost, making one wonder whether it was a Cup Final. In the end, it was the hard tackling, superior ball handling and the speed of the ACHE three quarter line that decided the match. The first half belonged totally to ACHE with APIIT being restricted to their 25 metre line. The fist try came through Fly Half Harsha Weerakkody after the ACHE three quarter line well supported by the forwards, made continuous moves, finally breaking the resistance of the APIIT team to score. The conversion attempt sailed past just outside posts.
Prop Forward Roshan Fonseka joined a three quarter move to power his way with several defenders clinging on to him to score far left. This try went unconverted. APIIT was not to be out done and fought back piling on immense pressure on the ACHE team and was rewarded with a try by Naval Meedin, the conversion hitting the cross bar and bouncing back. The try of the match came from dimunitive winger Andrew Jegan who then blazed 75 metres down the line leaving the defence flat footed to score under the posts, successfully converted to earn a well deserved victory for ACHE.
Angelo Yaseen, Sachith Navaratne,Rajeeve Perera and Kavinda Jayasena also played well for the winners while Naval Meedin was outstanding for the losers. |
