The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has decided not to field a Tamil candidate for the upcoming presidential election but will continue talks with the two main candidates, a TNA member said yesterday.
Parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran said the decision was taken at a meeting of the TNA members on Friday. He said they would continue discussions with both main candidates -- President Mahinda Rajapaksa and General (Retd) Sarath Fonseka -- on four main conditions.
These conditions are – to provide a full account of the people who are reported to have disappeared during the war and those arrested; to resettle all displaced people; withdrawing the High Security Zones to enable resettlement of people and working out a political settlement.
He said a TNA delegation met Senior Presidential Advisor and campaign manager Basil Rajapaksa on Monday and put forward the conditions.
TNA leader R. Sampanthan also met UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya and explained the party’s position. |
