A rare of opportunity to experience the Great Russian literature through cinema will be available starting from this week at the Russian Cultural Centre, Colombo.
A series of screen adaptation included directions based on the writings of world renowned writers Leo Tolstoy, Maxim Gorky, Alexander Ostrovsky, Anton Chekhov, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Mikhail Bulgakov and Mikhail Sholokhov.
Starting at 6 pm on Wednesday, all films will be subtitled in English and the entrance for the screenings is free.
Weekly film screening will kick off with ‘Anna Karenina’ based on Leo Tolstoy’s novel which will be shown on December 23 at 6 pm. Directed by Aleksandr Zarkhi, the 1967 Soviet drama film was listed to compete at the 1968 Cannes Film Festival, but the festival was cancelled due to the events of May 1968 in France.
Title role played by famous Russian actress Tatyana Samojlova, the melodrama centres around a tragic story of love and infidelity, the destiny of a woman who irrevocably changes her life for the sake of a passion. She rejects the morals of society and tries to defend her right to love.
