A group of former leading members of the 1971 JVP have come forward to support the candidature of Sarath Fonseka.
Kelly Senenayake who leads the Democratic People’s Forum said democracy had come down to its lowest depth under the present administration and it was their intention to ensure that the situation did not deteriorate further.
“President Mahinda Rajapaksa has shown he is no democrat and he is up against a man who has an unblemished record in 40 years of military service. There is no need for people to be suspicious of General Fonseka,” Mr.Senanayake told a news briefing.
Another frontliner Lionel Bopage, now residing in Australia, has extended his support to the opposition candidate, Mr.Senanayake said.
