TNA weighing assurances from election rivals

By Chris Kamalendran

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has yet to announce the stand it intends to take at the upcoming Presidential election, despite holding talks this week with the main election rivals, President Mahinda Rajapaksa and General (Retd.) Sarath Fonseka.

TNA Member of Parliament R. Thurairathnasingham told the Sunday Times that the TNA Parliamentary group meets tomorrow to discuss assurances given by President Rajapaksa and General Fonseka. Mr. Thurairathnasingham said the TNA held two separate meetings in Trincomalee yesterday. TNA Parliament group leader R. Sampanthan presided at both meetings, where the majority view was that the party should back General Fonseka at the Presidential election.

TNA MP Mavai Senadhiraja told the Sunday Times that the party had met President Rajapaksa and put forward several demands, and that the President had said the demands would be considered after a Parliamentary election.

Meanwhile, at least three TNA MPs – Ms. Thangeshwari Kathiraman, C. Chandrakanthan and S. Kishore – have declared their intention to back President Rajapaksa.
