1. Souza advised the prince, Jugo Bandara, to go to Goa and embrace Christianity, if he were to become the King of Kotte. The prince was happy about this suggestion and told his mother about it. She too liked the idea. So both the Prince Jugo Bandara and his mother, had a secret
discussion with Souza.
The king who heard about this got furious. He got Jugo Bandara killed. The elder prince too got frightened after the death of his brother. He left the palace.
2. He joined Souza and left the country. He fled to Goa. By this time, there were a number of Sinhala princes there. They were people, who had got involved in this struggle for power and had fled in fear. They had embraced Christianity. They had even changed their hereditary names and taken Portuguese names. The prince who went from Kotte, got his name changed to Don Louis.
3. Some close relatives of this prince were also there in Goa. One was his cousin, a son of King Buwanekabahu's sister. He had changed his name to Don Juan. So the prince had company and he did not feel lonely. The others whom he met there were also claimants to the thrones of Jaffna and Kotte. All these princes were treated very well in Goa.
4. The chiefs of Goa were very supportive of these princes. They too tried to get them the right to rule. They informed Lisbon about this and kept worrying both the king and queen about this issue. When the kings of Sri Lanka heard this, they were upset. King Buwanekabahu got disgusted of the Portuguese.
5. He distanced
himself from the Portuguese and became friends with King Mayadunne. King Wickramabahu, the King of Kandy, got to know of this development.
Though all these kings were related in some way, they were all power hungry. The King of Kandy was angry with King Mayadunne. He thought of making the maximum out of this situation and showed his loyalty to the Portuguese. He sought their help to attack
Sri Lanka.
6. By this time, an unexpected problem had arisen in Kotte. That was due to the bad conduct of the Portuguese. The Portuguese were cruel, badly behaved and
oppressive. The people of the country, suffered at their hands. The people began to complain to the king, from time to time. The king, in turn
complained to the Portuguese leader.
7. However, nothing came of this. Their leader did not take any notice. As a result, the Portuguese
continued with their low behaviour. The people were so oppressed, that it came to a point, where they got disgusted of the king. They lost the faith they had in him. King Buwanekabahu felt this change and
distanced himself further from the Portuguese. He showed that friendly
relations with them were breaking down. Then the clergy rose up.
8. They forced the Yuvaraja to embrace Christianity and informed of this to the king too.
The king protested in
disagreement. He insisted that kingship should go to a Buddhist. The clergy, informed the Portuguese leader of the situation. |
