The need for the effective use of information technology in the management of organizations has never been more important due to prevalent intense global competition and turbulent economic conditions which require informed decision making at all levels. Research into the failure of enterprise and wide information systems in Sri Lanka has revealed that in the majority of the cases the decision makers have not had the necessary skills to identify the exact information system needs of their organizations and select a system most appropriate for their situation. Similar shortcomings are observed in the skills for the design and development of information systems.
Thus, the need for accurate analysis, selection, effective implementation, maintenance and management of information systems cannot be understated. The manager today, therefore, needs to be knowledgeable about the capabilities and limitations of the usage of information technology irrespective of the industry or the functional area they are involved in.
The Department of Industrial Management of the University of Kelaniya is the pioneer among the Sri Lankan universities to recognize this need in the industry and cater to it. The need for senior management to incorporate information technology into their decision making prompted them to integrate IT into their programmes.
They have expanded their horizons to serve several hundred students annually and many national and international agencies through training, research, and consultancy services. The far reaching national and international advances made by the department since inception has been due to the dedication and commitment of the staff and the dedication of the students, which enabled the transformation of a small academic unit in the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, to a centre of excellence in the field of management and information technology that is an internationally recognized academic and professional service provider.
The undergraduate programme has received many accolades from employers of their students, reviewers both international and local that they launched a Master's degree in Management and Information Technology, making it the only department in the entire university system in Sri Lanka to offer such a degree progamme at postgraduate level.
The Master's degree in Management and IT aims to make the business executives competent to face the challenges of using modern information technology in their professional careers. This programme is designed for individuals who are highly motivated, energetic and aspiring to lead enterprises that require professionals competent to exploit technology in order to gain a presence in a fiercely competitive global marketplace.
The curriculum is unique since it integrates business with IT into a flexible coherent programme of study and taught in a scientific and analytical framework. The students will absorb knowledge and develop skills in areas such as business strategy, operations, finance and marketing management, information systems, data management, enterprise systems analysis and design, and web based business applications together with integrative subjects such as project management, management of technology and business process engineering. In order to encourage future job creators, an initiative has been launched to develop entrepreneurship as a major component of the curriculum, through a British Council funded collaboration with the University of Plymouth, UK.
