Some 150 traders at the Dambulla Economic Centre have been asked to contribute Rs. 10,000 each to fund the election campaign of a powerful politician in the area, sources informed the Sunday Times.
The politician summoned the traders to a meeting at the Dambulla Economic Centre yesterday morning and told them to come up with the money immediately, saying funds were urgently needed for the final phase of the politician’s election campaign.
The majority of the traders produced the money, while the others said they would bring the cash today, according to sources present at the meeting.
Many of the traders are furious, saying they have already made substantial contributions to the same campaign, but prefer not to make an issue of it, for obvious reasons. |
