Road discipline in this country has gone to the dogs. This did not happen overnight, but over a long period of time. Growing volumes of traffic, inadequate and poorly maintained roads, political interference, driving licences given in exchange for bribes are some of the problems.
But the biggest problem is the impotence of our Traffic Police.
Traffic Police are supposed to control the flow of traffic, and enforce road laws and the Highway Code. In this task, they have failed miserably.
All road users know what havoc is caused by three-wheelers, private bus drivers and motorcyclists. They ignore the right-of-way at roundabouts, they don’t stop for pedestrians at zebra crossings, they ignore traffic lights, they overtake at bends, they squeeze in between traffic lanes, they travel on the wrong side of the road – and all these road violations are done with impunity. Sometimes the culprits are Police officers themselves.
The amazing fact is that the Traffic Police are doing NOTHING to correct this situation.
As a motorist, I earnestly request the Inspector General of Police to do something about this.
We know what is happening on our roads today. The IGP should take positive action immediately. We should see a change by next week.
Over to you, Mr. IGP.
