Colombage Don Wilfred Weerasinghe - born: 1923 at Kohuwala - has died on April 14, 2010 in Colombo at the age of 87, following a heart failure. Cremation took place four days later.
He was a cricketer who represented the Bloomfield cricket club and Railway sports club, a division – 1 cricket umpire with over 25 years of experience and a senior station master in the Ceylon Government Railway (CGR).
‘CDW’ as he was fondly called by us, I vividly remember, was a soft spoken, well respected senior cricket umpire.
His elder son Channa is a banker and presently the manager at People’s bank Nugegoda.
Sanjeewa, his third son, made his test debut as a leg spin bowler against India in September 1985 at the age of 17 years 189 days - the youngest to play a test match for Sri Lanka. Sadly it was also his only test match.
Udaya and CDW, you will be greatly missed but always fondly remembered by very many of us. |
