“Being There” traces the meteoric rise to national prominence of a slow-witted gardener named Chance. Isolated all his life in a Washington D. C., townhouse, Chance’s knowledge of the world comes only from the TV programmes he constantly watches.
But one day Chance is thrust out of his nest and into an arena desperate for the few simple truisms he knows: the posh drawing rooms of Washington’s power brokers. Being there’s pacing is as sure-footed as Chance’s innocence, umbrella-twirling he strolled down DC’s elite corridors. And its comedy is a howl. Seeing Chance try to rid himself of a hostile street gang by changing channels on his remote control is just one of many highlights.
Playing in ‘Being There’ Melvyn Douglas won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Peter Sellers was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role. |
