Tax and cars
Was it an effort to allow all and sundry to import cars or was it meant for just one, powerful individual?
The story doing the rounds is that this week’s sharp fall in import duties for vehicles was to help an individual who is connected to the powers-that-be.

And, the final episode is that the old tax rates would be re-imposed. The other taxes on some electronic goods was a red herring otherwise the authorities would have faced a lot of flak, at a time when essential consumer goods are high, in reducing taxes on a non-essential and extravagant item.

How ironic!
An international bank that has been in the centre of a major commodities-funding controversy, ran a very interesting global ad this week, saying that it is a institution with a conscience.
Very ironic for the Colombo branch of the bank that was roundly criticized for virtually duping officials of a state agency into a one-sided deal. Latest reports indicate that a ‘very, very’ top bank official has either been transferred out or fired.

Glamorous girls with Nishantha
At an IIFA press conference on Thursday, on the eve of the weekend of events, SriLankan Airlines Chairman Nishantha Wickremasinghe was flanked by two charming girls.

Later an Indian actor ‘overawed’ by the beauty of the women commented, “When I retire I too want to join SriLankan Airlines as its chairman.” It didn’t immediately hit the audience. A few seconds later they burst into laughter.
