The John Keells Holdings (JKH) group said in a press release this week that it had conducted a number of environmental initiatives to commemorate World Environment Day (WED), on June 5.
The environmental activities were headed by the John Keells Social Responsibility Foundation.
The JKH group conducted a poster campaign using recycled paper and planted trees in the group's different business locations, to contribute to the United Nations’ Environment Programme ‘Plant for the Planet: Billion Trees Campaign,’ which is a worldwide tree planting initiative. JKH Group Chairman Susantha Ratnayake, kicked off the campaign by planting a Na sapling at the JKH premises at Glennie Street.
In addition, the company said reef cleanups were done at all four of the Maldivian resorts belonging to the group and a beach cleanup is lined up for this week by the Bentota Beach Hotel. JKH said several business units in the group had also conducted staff awareness programmes and educational programmes on WED for stakeholders.
The Foundation and the Cinnamon Lakeside hotel also unveiled the newly-landscaped section of the railway reservation near Masjidul Jalmiya Road, in Slave Island, on May 31 to re-green Slave Island, said the company.
Meanwhile, the John Keells Social Responsibility Foundation continues to support ongoing ‘green’ initiatives of the group, such as the Rumassala Nature Field Centre, the Keells Super Red Bag Project, the Butterfly Garden and the Compost project at Cinnamon Lodge Habarana, as well as environment-friendly initiatives under its Village Adoption Project. Other companies in the JKH group, too, engage in various initiatives towards minimising the impact of their operations on the environment, said JKH.
