Mischievously indulgent, sinking your teeth into the decadent chocolate brownie from ‘Rascals’ will whisk you back to when you were just knee high and had a voracious sweet-tooth. Soft, wickedly chocolaty, and dripping with chocolate sauce, the brownies available at ‘Rascals’ are a definite must-try. Though the champion treat, according to the founder and culinary genius of the ‘Rascals’- Sheran Roche (28), is the star of the world of baked-treats at Rascals.

The generously portioned large and chewy cookies are of a wide range which include chocolate chip, double chocolate chip, nuts ‘bout chocolate, date and nut, and butter cookies. The cookies are sold as the mega-sized (3.5 inches in diameter) which can be ordered as a minimum of 4 and the mini-sized (1.5 inches in diameter) which require a minimum order of 10.

Apart from the cookies the menu also includes, mini muffins, two varieties of parfait, sweet cinnamon scrolls, mini pizzas, sausage buns and the stewed chicken bun to name a few. All of which are priced between Rs. 15 to Rs. 120, the cheapest being the butter cookies and the most expensive being the black forest parfait.

An order must be placed at least a day before, as the running of Rascal’s is a one man show entirely. Sheran takes down orders, bakes them and even packs them. “It’s hard work but I enjoy doing it,” smiles Sheran, who started up Rascal’s just three months ago.

Though, would you believe the master baker, is qualified as an engineer. “I have an engineering degree but I didn’t want to join the family business of engineers”, shares Sheran, “I wanted to do something I enjoy doing which is cooking." It’s also interesting how Sheran discovered his love for cooking, or more accurately- baking. Having attempted it 6 years ago, Sheran says,“it’s when I went abroad for studies and had to cook. I found myself wondering ‘now how do you make parippu?’

Having learnt to cook and picking up tips from family and friends, Sheran cooked for himself and his friends while he was in university. “I know it sounds cliché, but I cooked because I like to see people enjoy eating the food I make. When someone says ‘man that was good’ it really makes me feel good and I think ‘yay!’, expresses Sheran animatedly.

Once, Sheran decided cooking was more his thing, he trained under the popular chef John Pierre. It was during this time that he discovered that baking was what he enjoyed most. The co-founder, baker and packer, has big plans for Rascal’s but for now he’s simply trying to arrange for deliveries of the orders.

Rascals is located at 20B, Ridgway Place, Colombo 4. For more information be sure to visit the Rascal’s Facebook page, that has been a phenomenal success in getting the attention of the public with a profile picture of a mouth-watering chocolate brownie.
