A milk powder price hike, which was reportedly put on hold in view of the parliamentary elections in April, came into effect from midnight yesterday.
The price of a 400g packet of milk powder has been increased by Rs. 19, and 1 kg pack by Rs. 48, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said yesterday.
This means a 1 kg pack which was sold at Rs. 550 will from today cost Rs. 598 while the 400g pack will cost Rs. 224.
According to CAA Secretary Anura Siriwardane, the prices were increased on a request by milk powder companies which claimed the world market prices had gone up. He, however, said the price increase allowed was less than what the companies asked for. |
