Gruesome murder of beggars in the city
By Damith Wickremasekara

Police believe a new gang which murders wayside beggars and robs their cash is now operating in Colombo. Investigations into the modus operandi of the gang were launched after yet another murder of a beggar on Tuesday (June 15)

The covered body of the beggar killed at the petrol shed in Colombo 2

The beggar had been in the habit of resting at the petrol shed in Colombo 2 after the shed had closed for business at night.

The officer in charge of the Slave Island police station, Manel Perera told the Sunday Times the beggar who operated in the area around the shed, usually sheltered for the night at the shed once it closed for business.

The OIC said the beggar had been killed by dropping a concrete block on his head. He added previously eight other beggars had been killed in similar fashion and a suspect was currently being held in custody.

“We are investigating as to whether a new gang has been formed to continue the killing spree,” he said.
He said police had gathered several clues regarding the incidents and were hopeful of making an early breakthrough.

Earlier a serial killer of beggars was arrested in Bambalapitiya. Investigations revealed he was responsible for at least two of the six murders of beggars reported in recent months.
