Koluu’s back with a taste of ‘Lemon’

By Nedra Wickremesinghe

Maitland Crescent is fast becoming the fashionable quarter of the city for clubs, bars, cafes and brasseries. The newest entry is ‘Lemon’ a chic eatery located at the roof top of the Gymkhana pool complex. What used to be just a dump for broken furniture of the club is now a friendly meeting place.

After the success of their pubs and night clubs, Sugar Burgers and Room Service Deliveries, the trio Shane Ismail, Gehan Fernando and Dinesh Wijesinghe of MSD Productions fame and owners of Silk Lounge Bar, located on the lower level of the building, spotted the potential of the roof top and have transformed it into Lemon Kitchen and Bar complete with dining area and fabulous roof terrace with a wonderful view of the club lawn, the swimming pool and the surrounding leafy neighbourhood. The dining area which is open on two sides is modern with contemporary art forming the backdrop with plain timber tables and high-gloss natural floors.

Master Chef Koluu is the Consultant Chef for Lemon Kitchens. The menu happily flits between some of his old favourites like Portuguese style seafood rice, chicken dhansak and belly pork in hot butter sauce to newer fare like stuffed leg of roast lamb with apricots and amaretto, served with amaretto and orange sauce.

Other mains run from Caribbean riblets and stuffed calamari, to a choice of grills served with fresh green salad with your choice of potato wedges or mash. To finish off there is a wide choice but try the all time favourites like the white chocolate cardamom mousse or the passion fruit mousse.

In addition to the lovely food created by the Chef, the Bar managed by the trio create some interesting cocktails like frozen strawberry margaritas, cranberry mohitos and lemon martinis. The white lounge chairs, the open terrace, the gentle evening breeze and a starry night all make up an invitation to linger.
