Despite GSP crisis, EU funds other Lankan projects

The EU, amidst the furore over the suspension of GSP+ concessions, is continuing large-scale funding of other projects with Rs 6.3 billion worth of infrastructure being handed over on Tuesday in the East.

The two projects - 400 km rural and provincial access roads and environment remediation programme which includes a solid waste management facility – were inaugurated by EU Ambassador Bernard Savage and Chief Minister of the Eastern Province Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan in Ampara.

These two projects carried out under the Europe Union's post-tsunami recovery Community Access were implemented through the United Nations Office for Project Services – UNOPS. These new infrastructures are part of the EU’s overall post-tsunami aid package to Sri Lanka, which is approximately Rs 24.2 billion. Mr Savage said the issue over EU GSP+ would not affect the long term funding of Sri Lankan projects .
