In parallel to the opening up of the Provincial Office, the Bank will conduct a survey to assess socio-economic conditions in the Northern Province. At the initial phase the Districts of Jaffna and Vavuniya in the Northern Province will be covered in the Survey.
Although both the Central Bank and the Department of Census and Statistics periodically conduct surveys in the country, it has not been possible to cover the Northern Province entirely in those surveys in the recent past due to the conflict situation that was in existence.
As a result there is inadequate upto date information on the province for use in development planning. The primary objective of conducting this sample survey is to collect comprehensive information on demographic features, living conditions, income levels, labour market situation, job aspirations and indebtedness and savings behavior from a sample of 1,000 households drawn from the urban and rural sectors of the Jaffna and Vavuniya Districts.
The data will be collected from the selected households through a structured questionnaire by means of interview. The presence of the head of the household or any other responsible adult member is essential for obtaining complete and accurate statistical information of a household.
The selected households will be notified of the visit of the field officers through their Grama Niladaries. The individual household information collected in this survey will be treated as strictly confidential and will not be divulged to any individual or institution under any circumstances.
The collection of data survey will commence from 1st week of July 2010 in the Jaffna district and will continue until August 2010.
In view of national importance of this exercise the Central Bank of Sri Lanka kindly requests the citizens of Jaffna and Vavuniya districts, particularly members of the selected sample of households to extend their fullest cooperation in doing this survey by providing the required information to the field staff. |
