Everything a person needs to know about IT and other miscellaneous facts can now be found in a glossy new magazine. The magazine ‘Nerds N Geeks’ is the brain child of IT wiz, Chaman Ipalawatta, and is essentially for people who are currently starting their career in the IT field; providing novices with the know-how of those who’ve had years of experience in the industry.
According to Chaman, young people who are fresh out of university and are learning to walk in the real IT world stumble around for much too long attempting to apply their textbook knowledge. “During my time at my previous workplace, I noticed that the freshers from university didn’t have the necessary applied skills. The problem was that whatever they learnt at university was not enough,” Chaman, who is also a visiting lecturer, elaborates. “If you take the industry, there’s a heap of knowledge that is not going to the students.”
Chaman illustrates his point with code commenting. Different IT organisations will have their own method of commenting, depending on what works best for them, textbooks however don’t provide students with information on the different ways of code commenting. This is where the magazine comes in. Filling that void, the first issue of ‘Nerds N Geeks’ has a double page spread written by José M Aguilar, with 13 tips on code commenting.
Having single-handedly compiled the magazine and had it published, Chaman speaks about the process of putting the magazine together. “Basically I contacted a whole bunch of people in the industry and they volunteered to contribute with their knowledge and experience.” Writers for the quarterly magazine included two employees of MAS holdings, three international contributors- from Spain, U.S.A and Australia, a lawyer and a retired banker.
Discussing a range of topics from search engine optimisation, financial management, employee leave entitlement to how to start out as a digital artist, the magazine provides those who are starting their career in the IT industry with just about everything they need to know and more.
