Delimitation panel reviews plans for fresh village borders

By Leon Berenger

The Delimitation Committee, that has been set up to review and change the existing boundaries of the Divisional Secretary and Grama Niladhari divisions, will meet in the first week of September, a senior official said yesterday.

Delimitation Committee secretary S K Weeratunga told The Sunday Times that some 1,500 written submissions had already been received from a cross-section of people and interested organisations.
Some 85 per cent of the proposals has sought changes at the Grama Niladhari levels, and the bulk of submissions had poured in from the Eastern Province, while the response from the northern sector was poor, Ms Weeratunga added.

The 13-member committee, headed by former Central Bank Governor H B Dissanayake, will make recommendations on changing the existing boundaries after studying all requests, she said.

At present, there are some 300 Divisional Secretaries and an estimated 14,000 Grama Niladharis throughout the country.
