We all know that being able to play an instrument expertly is a talent, but somehow, it hasn’t been given as much prominence in schools. Taking on the initiative to change that, the Youth Music Council was established recently to promote and encourage students to explore their talent in playing an instrument or more.
The Youth Music Council consist of students from 7 schools, namely S. Thomas College, Bishop’s College, Ladies’ College, St. Peter’s College, Royal College, Holy Family Concent School- Colombo 4, and Nalanda College. Eneeshya Perera, a chairperson of the council, says “if they [the students] have potential to become a musician, we want to pave the way for them”. Chairperson Prishani de Mel says “since this is the first competition we’ve organised, getting teams to participate wasn’t easy, given that the council was formed just a year and a half ago and isn’t well known. But with the encouragement and support of the Principals, we were able to make this happen”, adding “we want to provide students across the island with the opportunity to show their talent in playing an instrument and encourage them to improve”.

Doing just that, the council has organised a competition ‘INSTRIAGO’ which is currently in progress, having wrapped up the preliminary around, the council is preparing for the finals. The preliminary around showcased the talents of students from several schools, however 5 teams made the final cut having impressed the panel of judges. The judges included Mahesh Denipitiya, Shobinath Perera and Anoma Fernando. Eshantha Peiris will be the guest judge at the finals.
The teams that made it into the finals are String Quintet and Blended Beats two teams from Bishop’s College, Thomian Chamber Orchestra and Fusion Band both teams from S. Thomas College, and Joie de Vivre from St. Johns College.
The teams consist of 2 to 8 members and they either compose original music or make their own renditions of popular music. The Youth Music Council welcomes all to watch the teams perform at the finals on August 23, 7.30pm at the Bishop’s College Auditorium. Tickets are available at Commons and Thorana at Majestic City and Liberty Plaza. |
