Driven by an impulse

By David Stephens

After pondering over different musical concepts that would both appeal to and attract a large and youthful crowd, a dynamic group of diverse artistes were suddenly struck by an arbitrary impulse to stage a unique creative collaboration.

‘On An Unknown Impulse’ is a concert which is a thorough amalgamation of instrumental music, song and dance. The 20 unheralded performers who take to the stage will seek to demonstrate their versatility and talent, performing in acoustic sessions, solo acts and fusion drumming exhibitions.

“This is a show which will cater to a young crowd so we will be providing the type of music they will appreciate and be excited by,” explains Dushyantha Desilva (18), one of the performers and chief catalysts behind the concert.

To achieve this, the group of musicians, all very young themselves, hope to include special acts and events that will appeal to their young audience.

“We plan to wrap up the show with a special dance tribute to Michael Jackson. We are still looking at a lot of possible options for this but it will probably be us dancing to a medley of his songs,” reveals Dushyantha.

Dushyantha further states that half an hour prior to each show members of the audience can go to specially erected stalls full of musical instruments and entertain themselves by playing whichever instrument they prefer. In addition there will also be stalls which serve food and drink.

Presently, with just over a week to go before the concert, the group is busy tweaking and fine tuning each aspect of their performance. Most of them agree that this venture is something completely unique and novel to them.

“I’m used to playing drums for a rock band so it is a very new experience for me to play to a more Sri Lankan style. I have to use a lot more variety while playing and bring in my own take on things,” 17 year-old Dilan Lyman explains.

Gayanaka DeSilva (17) opines that one of the major differences is that they had to stage this show completely by themselves, whereas previously the shows they were involved in were put together by their schools.

Dushyantha affirms this view, however he adds, "putting this concert together hasn’t really been that difficult. Most of us have been involved with music for a while so we knew what to do, plus we also know each other quite well so that made things easy. The only difficulty actually came in finding financial support for our idea.”

‘On an Unknown Impulse’ will be held from 6.30pm on September 3 and 4 at the Nuga Sevana, on the Cathedral Grounds at Bauddhaloka Mawatha. Tickets are priced at Rs. 500. For more information contact Dushyantha on 0773242533.
