The AGM of the National Stroke Association of Sri Lanka (NSASL) will be held today, September 5 at 10 a.m. at the Hatton National Bank Towers, Level 21, conference room, No. 479, T.B. Jayah Mawatha, Colombo 10.
This will be followed by a guest lecture by Dr. Palitha Maheepala, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health on strategies for prevention and rehabilitation of stroke patients in Sri Lanka.
The Stroke Association invites members of the public to attend the lecture, Baron de Livera, a council member said.
The NSASL will be organizing the next Asia Pacific Stroke Conference in September 2011 in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Stroke Organisation (APSO) and WSO.
The Stroke Association held a ceremony to mark World Stroke Day on October 29, 2009 and this event under the leadership of NSASL President Dr. Padma Gunaratne won a Gold Award for the Association in a survey of events conducted by member associations worldwide.
Highlights of that event were: distribution of social welfare facilities to disabled stroke patients including housing benefits, self-employment grants and wheel chairs (co-ordinated by the Ministry of Social Services and Social Welfare); stroke awareness programmes for the public; presentation of proposed national stroke strategy to Secretary, Ministry of Health; appointment of three social workers/ counsellors to the National Hospital, Colombo South Teaching Hospital and Provincial Hospital, Kurunegala; a lecture on social services for stroke victims and distribution of books on the subject to patients and healthcare workers.
Courses on care of the disabled stroke patient were regularly conducted by Drs. Padma Guneratne, Lalith Wijeratne and the Stroke Rehabilitation team during the year at the Stroke Unit in Colombo. A special training course was conducted for nurses from the National Hospital Colombo and Provincial Hospital, Kegalle to work in stroke units in these hospital.
A stroke awareness programme and a carer education programme co-ordinated by Dr. Dharshana Wijegoonesinghe, consultant neurologist was started in the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital with the setting up of the new Stroke Unit.
Production of a tele-documentary on strokes was also successfully completed under the coordination of Daya Abeysekera, joint editor. |
