It is with great sadness that I note the passing away of Dr. Abeyratne Bandaranayake. Many in the livestock and agriculture sectors would be aware of his contributions. He was a veterinarian with a PhD in microbiology. He began his career as a veterinary research officer with the Department of Agriculture, and was later promoted to deputy director, animal health and production.
In 1977, he was made director of the Department of Agriculture – the only veterinarian to be given this appointment. He was also the first director of the Department of Animal Production and Health, when the department was set up in 1978.
Dr. Abeyratne Bandaranayake was a consultant for international organisations, including the United Nations and the Asian Development Bank. He was our delegate on animal health and production for such international organisations as the Office International des Epizooties (Paris), the Animal Production and Health Commission for Asia, and the South Pacific (Bangkok) and FAO (Rome).
He served as director/head of several government organisations, including the National Livestock Development Board and the National Milk Board. Unlike some government officers who go on working in government service till they reach 60, Dr. Bandaranayake put his pen down when he reached 55.
His deep knowledge of livestock development and management issues enabled him to negotiate with foreign donors and organisations to obtain funds for the country’s development. Dr. Bandaranayake made a huge contribution to agriculture and livestock development in Sri Lanka. His integrity was an example to the others.
May my “guru” Dr. Bandaranayake attain Nibbana.
