The 61st Army Day was commemorated on October 10, by the 23rd Army division with several welfare initiatives targeting the community.To commemorate the Army Day, two houses each worth Rs eight lakhs, were constructed by the soldiers from the funds raised by the Vishwa Parami Foundation and the donations of senior Army officers attached to the 23rd Division.
The Commandant of the 23rd Division Major General Boniface Perera RWP RSP Psc handed over these houses to beneficiaries on October 10. The recipients include C.A. Chandrawathie, a feeble widow from Bo Atta- Polonnaruwa and R.M. Seelawathie from Mahasenpura Polonnaruwa.
A concept of Major General Boniface Perera, these donations were made to promote Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya’s vision to get the Army involved in development and social welfare.
Art, dance and music to remember Lionel Wendt
Come November, it will be the 110th birth anniversary of Lionel Wendt who left a lasting imprint on the arts in this country not only through his seminal work as a photographer but also through his patronage of the arts.
In memory of the great man the Lionel Wendt Art Centre will present the Lionel Wendt Memorial Festival - A Festival of Art, Music, Dance and Drums, Photography and Sculpture from November 16- 20.
The Festival will be launched with an exhibition of art and sculpture by leading Sri Lankan artists on November 16 and an exhibition of Lionel Wendt photographs at the Harold Peiris Gallery, this being the Art Centre collection of original Lionel Wendt photographs. In addition to these exhibitions, there will also be displays by the Photographic Society of Sri Lanka and a screening of The Song of Ceylon, the iconic film on Ceylon produced by Basil Wright and narrated by Wendt himself.
As the week progresses, there will be a classical music concert featuring leading names in the contemporary scene, followed by an Evening of Choral Music on November 19 and the festival will conclude on the 20th with an evening of dance. |
