Six Ruhunu students suspended

The injured Prof. Mendis leaving Matara hospital

Six students of the Ruhunu University were suspended yesterday for their alleged involvement in the attack on the Vice Chancellor Susirith Mendis. Prof. Mendis said the suspects were also alleged to have attacked two other staff members.

The decision to suspend the students was taken at a special University Council Meeting attended by the VC, Deans and external members from the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The suspended students were from the faculties of Management and Finance, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Vice Chancellor said. He said that at yesterday’s meeting it was also decided to appoint a three-member committee to conduct a full probe on what took place on Wednesday. The committee would also monitor the activities of the students.

Prof. Mendis was injured when he intervened to prevent a clash between two student groups on Wedneday.
