A close game expected at Royal-Thomian water-polo first leg

It’s that time of the year when old boys and supporters of Royal and S. Thomas’ gather to cheer their teams for the annual Water-Polo game between these two institutions for the Dr. R.L. Hayman Trophy first leg which is to be played on October 26 (Tuesday) at the Police Pool in Narahenpita.

S. Thomas’ have won this encounter on 11 occasions while Royal has won it on five occasions since the introduction of the series in 1992. Two outings have ended in draws.

The second leg of this prestigious game will be worked off on October 30 (Saturday). Royal has been winning the trophy consecutively for five years from 2005.Prior to that the Thomians have won it for eleven years.

Dr. R.L.Hayman, the donor of the trophy, was a past sub warden of S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia in 1935 who gifted the original swimming pool of S. Thomas’.

Royal College will be led by Shehan Dassanayake a fourth year coloursman, who has also turned out for the champion Royal College rugby XV. Vice captain of the side is Althaf Yakoob, a National swimmer and a third year coloursman.

The Thomians field a strong outfiot under the leadership of B.A.C.A. Perera, a National Water-Polo player. He is a fourth year coloursman. The vice captain of the Thomian team is Norwich Paranawithana, a third year coloursman. Both teams have been training hard for the event and a close series is expected.
