Sam's Place - takes to the waterways
By Maxie Kariyawasam.

Education is a must for each and every child. Sam's Place a Montessori School, rated among the best in Colombo apart from providing day care facilities and education for the age group 4 months to 5 years respectively also inculcates in them good habits, keeping in mind that you carry into your adult life the habits and discipline you acquire in your childhood days. It is said that whenever students sharpen their pencils the residue which falls unto the ground has to be immediately picked up by the students concerned and deposited in the w. p. b. so as to keep the floor clean.

The latest venture by Sam's Place was to introduce the students and parents to the waterways, not merely for the pleasure of a boat ride but also to educate them to keep our waterways clean by not polluting them with unwanted objects like polythene bags, broken slippers, broken cutlery and crockery and literally hundreds of unusable items. This was on November 7th in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Navy who have done yeoman service by cleaning the waterways or canals in and around Colombo and have themselves introduced a ferry service around various locations.

The introductory talk was given by Lieutenant Commander Weerasinghe of the Navy Ferry Service at Narahenpita who described the route of our intended tour, naming the canals that we would be travelling on. An appreciative crowd of about 100, both adults and students lapped up the information given on how the trip should be enjoyed and also ways and means of preventing pollution of the waterways. The Sri Lanka Navy on their part were keen on personal safety and urged both adults and students to wear protective anti-sink life vests in case of accidents. The trip then commenced in five boats manipulated superbly by Navy personnel and the 1st stage was up to St. Peter's College grounds and the 2nd was even longer taking us to Water's Edge and Parliament where everyone who travelled in these boats really had an enjoyable and educative trip.

The Principal and Director of this fabulous school is Samantha, the daughter of Dicky Delpechitra who is himself a director of the school and ably assisted by Yalantha Gunasekera the Head Teacher and Shafriza Naizer the Assistant Head Teacher who collectively make it a point to turn out responsible and duty conscious citizens out of the students in their charge by making them carry into their adult lives the education, clean habits and discipline that only those who genuinely care for their students' welfare can pass on.
