College of World Education, the well known provider of quality English medium Education from Nursery to London GCE O/L and A/L is moving to Colombo from January 1 2011.
The College was started in January 1996 at Keppitipola Mawatha, Colombo 5 and had to be shifted to Rajagiriya in 2000 due to the problems arising as it was in a high security zone. The school grew rapidly at Rajagiriya, resulting in the need for the construction of a two storied classroom block. However, in 2008 the landlord had agreed to lease the premises to the giant super market chain 'Food City' and the school had to be relocated in a hurry at Thalawathugoda, too far to travel. So the management has decided to shift the school back to Colombo at two locations in close proximity to each other. The primary school will be located at No 14, Fairfield Gardens, Borella and the High School at No 128 Cotta Road Borella. It is hoped that the enrolment will soon pick up to reach the original number of 250.
Founder and managing Director of the College of World Education, the internationally renowned educationist Dr.Frank Jayasinghe assures us that he did not allow the enrolment to go beyond 250, at any time during its history of 15 years. He says this was done by keeping the class size to a maximum of 15 to enable the teachers to give personalized attention to each and every student.
The students are encouraged to develop to their optimum potential at his/ her own pace. To achieve this, teachers have to be well experienced, patient and understanding .They have to be counsellors as well as teachers. To develop each student as a whole person, religion is also taught from Nursery through Form III. Value Education and Life Skills are part of the curriculum.
Dr. Jayasinghe strongly believes that education should not be confined to classrooms, laboratories, and libraries. He observes that students learn best by experiencing first hand what they study in classes or read in their History and Geography books. The school takes different batches of students to places of historical and geographical importance in Sri Lanka every year. Study tours abroad are organized during the long summer vacation.
They have already toured Singapore, Thailand, India, China and Egypt including the Nile River Cruise. An Educational tour of Italy and Greece is being planned for July 2011.
The Primary school will be headed by Mrs.Prineetha Gopallawa, who was Principal of Burhani Serendib School, the Head of Elementary Section at Wycherly Int.School and Head of the Primary School at St.Nicholas' Int. School and is now directly responsible for the primary school of College of World Education and is also the Vice Principal of the School.
The High School will be directly supervised by Dr.Frank Janyasinghe who has vast experience in the field of Education both in Sri Lanka and abroad. He was Head Master St.Thomas' College Gurutalawa, Sub- Warden at St.Thomas' College Mt.Lavinia, Director of Development and Principal of the prestigious Kadaikanal Int.School in India and the Founder Principal of Wycherly International, St.Nicholas' International School and the College of World Education. He also serves on the United World Colleges; London, International Baccalaureate Geneva and the International Council for Curriculum and Institution New York.
