As we reflect on the year almost passed, let us remember all of those special moments filled with love, we shared with others. Whether they were between family members, loved ones, or complete strangers these are the moments we cherish. Love comes in many different forms and it does not necessarily always arrive in heart shaped boxes. Sometimes love’s light can shine through the most traumatic of situations; when we feel as if we cannot move forward.
At one point or another, we have all received the gift of love; witnessed it in its most perfect state. However for some, its message is rarely realized. For others still, perhaps rarely beheld.
In this final week of December as we move toward a new year and a new beginning, let us each learn how to give the gift of love. Volunteerism in itself is a movement of love in action. By sharing your individual talents with the world without expectation of anything in return, love incarnate is able to move through you into whatever project you decide. From singing a song, building a home, feeding the hungry, or writing a letter, there are opportunities everywhere for volunteering.
The true meaning of Christmas is to give to those in need. It is to celebrate life and to remember and love the poor and meek. Yesterday amongst the joyous festivities shared with loved ones, many did not receive material gifts or those associated with love. But this can change! By committing one day of our time to volunteering, we are able to give a love filled moment to somebody in need.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery once said, “For true love is inexhaustible; the more you give, the more you have”. By giving the gift of love through volunteerism or any other medium, we can begin that process. Empower yourself by empowering others! Explore your community and discern where love is lacking. Find a volunteer organization to work with, or simply begin on your own. Either way, make it a resolution this new year to continue the process of love: give!
