Creating awareness in our own way

We are all human and as such it is in our nature to help others who are in need. Unfortunately, the situation in our country is such that charitable groups and organizations are not always easily within our reach and hence your awareness plays a big role in reversing this situation. In many developed countries it is common to see charitable groups holding stalls on the main roads to attract donors.

Unfortunately, in a country such as ours, the effort in running such a stall often outweighs the benefits of it. We usually hear about charitable organizations through more personal means: our friends’ involvement, charitable events which publicize their beneficiaries, or even our own research. As a result there lies a communication gap between charities that need our support and us, the greater community, who step out and act.

Therefore, if you are fortunate enough to stumble upon a cause that you feel strongly about, share your knowledge with others. We live in an age where the means of spreading awareness have been made simple and convenient owing to the many online social networks available and the ease of communication that technology has brought us. An email, a status update, a twitter update, a text message, a conversation at a party is all it takes to spread the word amongst us. If each person shares his/her knowledge with a close circle of friends and the cycle continues for each person thereafter, a snowballing of knowledge is created.

When you witness something that you know is unjust don’t just shake your head in dismay – there are things you can do, steps you can take to ensure it does not prevail. Let people know about it: wrong-doers can hide from one set of eyes but not the eyes of an entire community.

Find out about those who are already doing something about the injustices of society: if you find something upsetting, there are certainly many others who have shed more blood, sweat and tears over it. Find out how you can get involved. We are all blessed with time, money and natural talents. Therefore use what you have to the best of your ability.

If every single person acts in the name of one cause they truly believe in then we can surely bring about the changes we want to see in the world. Take the first step and find something you care about; sensitize those around you and inspire them to action. Awareness creates the means to empowerment.

Remember: we only have six degrees of separation.
