Well - known author of English language books, Bernard de Silva has been honoured with a Kalabhushana state award. Educated at St. Aloysius College, Galle he has been in the literary field for over 25 years.
He began his teaching career from Ganegama, Baddegama, St. Anthony's College and also served at Kalawana and Karawita Central Schools and Atakalanpanne Vijaya Maha Vidyalaya in the Ratnapura District and at Lumbini and Royal Colleges, Colombo.
Besides teaching English, he had been actively involved in sports and other activities in these schools. In 1974, he introduced rugby football to Lumbini College. He retired from Royal College after 30 years of service.
Mr. de Silva was the first secretary of the all-island Anthurium Growers' Cooperative Society in 1972. He also served as an English teacher in the Maldives.
From 1984 up to now he has published 40 books on the English language for schoolchildren and adults including books on English grammar, essays, spoken English and workbooks. He is an all-island Justice of the Peace. In 2007, he received a Presidential award in recognition of his literary work. |
