On Saturday, March 19, thirty Funday Times Club Members enjoyed a great morning at Nuga Gama, the village in the city, at Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo. The main focus of the event was the International Year of Forests.
At 9 a.m., the members gathered at the Cheers Kids Club, for registration. The
30 members were divided into three teams.
Gamini, the Village Headman, first took them on a tour of Nuga Gama, explaining the traditional usage of various
structures and utensils at Nuga Gama, such as the Ambalama, Edanda, Pinthaliya, Kamata and so on.
The first fun activity which was held in the Salawa, was learning the deadly facts on deforestation. Facts on deforestation were hung from the trees and the members ran around reading and absorbing
whatever information they could.
A quiz on the subject followed and prizes were awarded to the winners.
After a refreshing drink of fresh narang juice, a jungle hunt was next on the agenda. Sixteen different animal tracks were
hidden around Nuga Gama and the three teams had to find the tracks and identify the animals. The Red team were the winners and were presented with chocolates from Cinnamon Grand. The Yellow and Blue teams also received consolation prizes.
The final activity for the morning was on recycling paper and magazines, after which the kids enjoyed traditional village foods such as kiribath, imbul kiribath, roti with lunumiris, kaludodol, kokis and pol toffee. Finally, the ice-cream mama announced his arrival
blowing a horn and the kids flocked round him for their favourite ice-cream to cool off after a fun day.
Many thanks to the aunties and uncles of the Cinnamon Grand
PR team and Nuga Gama for
hosting this event and organizing the fun activities and refreshments.
