The biggest culinary show soon in town

The Chefs Guild of Lanka will present Culinary Art 2011, Sri Lanka's biggest food and hotel show at BMICH from July 29 to August 1. The hotel show is being held for the 14th time, the organisers said at a news conference held at the Hilton-Colombo.

The Chefs Guild of Lanka was formed in 1988, to encourage young girls and boys to join the trade. All chefs across the island are members of the Guild that currently has nearly 3500 registered chefs.

'Culinary Art' is the only event where the chefs could display their professionalism and artistic talents.

A trade show is also organized where the sponsors would get the opportunity to display their products. This show will run for three days followed by the grand awards ceremony; key personalities in the world of gourmet cuisine and international journalists and judges will attend the event.

The competitions will be conducted on four different categories such as static display (where the prepared food is displayed for judging), practical - live category (where the professionals and apprentice chefs will prepare a meal), beverage challenge category ( for the bartenders ) and non industry professionals category where the non professionals such as housewives who love cooking can take part.

"This is the first time that we have opened the culinary competition for non professionals outside the hospitality industry on a limited basis; we will have a full show for non-professionals next year," says Executive committee member of the organizing Committee Tilak Senaratne.

The event would be judged according to the judging criteria given by the World Association of Chefs Society said Chairman of the Chefs Guild of Lanka Gerard Mendis.

Charitha Atak to help Helpage

The hilarious stage play 'Charitha Atak' by versatile actor Wilson Guneratne will be staged on Sunday, May 15 at the Bishop's College auditorium as a fundraiser for Helpage Sri Lanka. The show is being held to raise funds to support the organisation's drive to help those with vision problems.

Two shows both on May 15 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. will be held. Tickets are at Keells supermarkets, Sarasavi Bookshops, Unik Creations, Majestic City, CD World, Bambalapitiya, at the HelpAge office and at the gate.

The projects that the funds will be channelled to are the HelpAge Eye Care Centre which provides free cataract surgery and residential care to the needy, the HelpAge Mobile Medical Unit - two buses equipped with eye screening facilities and a pharmacy to serve senior citizens islandwide, the HelpAge Mobile Medical Camp, the HelpAge Ayurveda Centre conducted weekly at the HelpAge Centre in collaboration with the University of Colombo's Faculty of Ayurveda Medicine and the HelpAge Day Centres that provide care for elders and a place for recreation.

Wellness seekers in Sri Lanka can now turn to VLCC centres

VLCC an international brand celebrated the opening of two VLCC centres for slimming, beauty and fitness in Colombo and Nugegoda and are looking to expand their presence in key locations across Sri Lanka.

Make your own Vesak lantern with BC

Be creative and make your own Vesak Lantern during the Vesak season. This BC competition is open for children aged 15 years and above. Interested applicants must register themselves on or before May 10 by filling up a form at the British Council Library Help Desk in Colombo.

The deadline for submitting the Vesak Lantern is May 15. Winners will receive prizes, while certificates will be issued to all participants. For further information regarding the competition, please call the British Council Library Help Desk on 4521521 on the following days: Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5.p.m., and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4.p.m.

The visiting Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir will sing at the evening service at St. Michael and All Angels, Polwatte, Colombo 3 on Tuesday, May 3 at 6 p.m.

The little dancing girls at festival of performing arts

The Voice over Festival of the Performing Arts Institute featuring the students of Richmond House of Children Ballet Institute was held recently at Weera Kakulu Hall in Galle. The students who performed a variety of items were trained by Moshika Jayatunga, a past student of the Oosha Garten ballet school.
The institute is a member of the British Art Festivals Association.
