Sports Ministry to eradicate malpractices in sport

Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has appointed administrative committees to oversee the activities of seven sports according to a media statement released by the ministry. Accordingly Kabbadi, netball, cycling, karate-do, bodybuilding, squash and badminton will come under the supervision of provisional administrative committees.

“The Minister of Sports cancelled elections of eight sports governing bodies after receiving complaints on malpractices by the officials of these federations. The minister decided to appoint temporary administrative committees for seven sports and appointed an interim committee for the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA),” revealed the spokesman of the ministry Harsha Abeykoon.

According to an official media release of the Ministry of Sports, the minister has acted upon the Article 25 of the Sports Act of 1973, which states that all sports federations and associations have to complete their annual elections prior to March 31 annually.

“The ministry is investigating on the complaints received. An administrative committee is similar to an interim committee but it is a temporary governing body. As soon as the investigations of the seven federations come to an end, elections will be held in accordance to the sports law of the country. The officials of the appointed for the seven administrative committees consist of administrators from the Department of Sports Development (DSD).

Padma Beddewela, Assistant Director of DSD has been appointed for the Sri Lanka Netball Federation. Sri Lanka Kabadi Association will come under BDL Kularatne, Programme Officer of DSD. IP Wijeratne, Lecturer of National Institute of Sports Science will chair the committee for the Sri Lanka Cycling Federation while Saman Samarakoon, Programme Officer of DSD is in-charge of the Sri Lanka Karate-Do Federation.

Sajith Jayalal, Deputy Director of DSD will head the administrative committee of the Sri Lankan Bodybuilding Federation. Dammika Senanayake from the National Institute of Sports Science heads the committee of the Sri Lanka Squash Federation, while MT Padmasiri, Deputy Director (Finance) will oversee the Sri Lanka Badminton Association.
