Easy going, creative and very talented, Ruvin de Silva is one ‘deceptively’ wiry package! The drummer, underestimated vocalist, actor, photographer and a work-in-progress Director, Ruvin, shares snippets of what makes him tick, or should I say ‘click’!
Q: What is it about photography that appeals to you so much?
A: Life is a movie. Photography is like still shots from that movie.
Q: When and how did you first take to photography?
A: Deshan Tennekoon, Yanik Tissera and Timothy Barco inspired me.
Q: Who got you your first camera?
A: My friend called me up one night and said he was selling his old camera. I didn’t have a cent back then but my grandma spon sored it. I bought it the very next day.
Q: Is photography something you want to do professionally, or is it a hobby?
A: Both. Now it has become some thing I do.
Q: What are your favourite subjects?
A: People, faces and places. Actually anything I find interesting, like my broth er’s ‘ex-pet’ scorpion, for instance.
Q: You also act, and play in a band. Tell me a bit about that side of your life.
A: Theatre is a big deal to me. I love it, and it has changed my life. It’s an amazing feel ing to let go of yourself sometimes, and be something/one else for awhile. I’m slowly getting involved with directing. These days I’m working on something for an upcoming production later this year.
I’ve not been working much on my music, but I do listen to it all the time. All my inspiration comes from music.
Q: What’s your day job?
A: Eat cereal in the morning, go to College, work on my freelance work during class hours, work on College work after College hours, and head home.
Q: Do you intend to hold an exhibition of your work in the near future?
A: Yes, hopefully soon.
Q: Where do you see your photography tak ing you?
A: Travel. Last month I went to Jaffna on my own and I loved it! I want to do it much more. See more things and go around.
Q: Describe that moment just before you click, when you know it’s going to be an amazing capture.
A: I never know. Most of the time I’m freaking out. Nervous.
